Chapter Eighteen

The monitor light glared at Ryan as he scrolled through the documents on the Wickes case. Shandra had called him two hours ago to see where he was and if he minded that she stayed in town to have dinner with Ted and Naomi.

He preferred her hanging out with her friends than running around trying to help him solve this case. There was a killer in Huckleberry, and he wasn’t sure if it was a woman who had lived here her whole life or the group from Las Vegas.

The way his victim died had been planned. It sounded as if no one in the victim’s family had known she was even in the state. But all of the people who had an interest in what she was doing and who she was talking to, knew where she was.

What bothered him the most—the spa had been a spur of the moment thing. How had the killer known to find her there and administer what had to have been bee venom? He was still waiting for a report on all the honey jars he and the deputy had collected to see if any had an unusual amount of bee venom in them. The glasses he’d bagged from the room next to the murder site had fingerprints from Alice, the spa manager, and Chad, the man who worked in the reception area. It turned out he also gave massages. The two had said they were discussing his schedule in that room earlier in the day because it was not being used.

This was strange considering Alice had an office, but he wasn’t going to worry about the relationships between the spa workers. It didn’t have anything to do with the murder. The pregnancy had changed Ms. Wickes plans. Had it also changed Maxmillan’s or possibly his wife’s?

Until more tests came back, he could track down more about the whereabouts of the people involved.

Ryan’s mind and body snapped to attention. Surveillance tapes and the readouts from the keycards of the people at the lodge. He wrote up a warrant for the tapes and key activity and sent it off to the district attorney. If he was lucky the D.A. would see it first thing in the morning and he’d have the papers in his hand by nine and head to the lodge.

Ted walked down to the back door with Shandra. “Tough break for the Wickes family,” he said.

She stopped and stared at him. “Did you know Emma?”

He shook his head. “I was friends with her brother. He was fifteen years older than Emma. He died in the service.”

“Were they the only two children?” she asked, now understanding the bedroom left as a shrine. Ryan had told her about the photos and awards.

“Yes. After Rory died, Mr. and Mrs. Wickes poured everything they had into Emma. Their hearts broke when she moved to Las Vegas. In a way, you couldn’t help but think it was the best thing for her to do. Her parents had become overprotective.
